Join us for our next Open Studios at AiR 351, on October 14 (Saturday), from 11am to 7pm, with our current residents: Alice Miceli, Edison Peñafiel, Suzana Queiroga and Jessica Segall.
Alice Miceli´s methodology initiates with investigative trips and historical research through which the artist retraces cultural and physical vestiges of past traumas inflicted on social and natural landscapes. The gathered material from her field trips and research projects takes the form of still photographs and videos. Recent selected solo exhibitions include “In Depth (minefields)”, presented at the Instituto PIPA, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2019); “Projeto Chernobyl”, at The Americas Society (AS/COA), New York, USA (2019) and “In Depth (minefields) – Angola and Bosnia”, at the Escola das Artes, Universidade Católica, Porto, Portugal (2022), also displayed at the 17th Istanbul Biennial. Alice Miceli is a PLMJ / AiR 351 grant recipient (2023).
Edison Peñafiel’s lens-based work is an exploration of marginalized experiences, focusing on migrants, laborers, and individuals under surveillance. Through immersive installations that blend photography, sculpture, video, and animation, Peñafiel sheds light on their multifaceted stories within prevailing power structures. His lens-based language draws inspiration from German Expressionism and surveillance influences, captivating viewers with distorted lines and evocative imagery that question oppressive forces and dehumanizing practices. Peñafiel is an alumnus of Oolite Arts and has been part of Mass MoCA and Anderson Ranch Art residencies. His work has been presented at the Bass Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, the Orlando Museum of Art, the Atlantic Center for the Arts and Sabrina Amrani Gallery, among others. Peñafiel is represented by Sabrina Amrani Gallery in Madrid, Spain.

Suzana Queiroga works with a wide variety of media, including videos, performances, installations, inflatables, paintings, drawings, engravings and sculptures. Recently Suzana´s work integrated the following solo shows: “Pelo Tempo – Suzana Queiroga”, Casa da Cultura de Petrópolis (2023); “From My Window”, ZSenne Art Lab, Belgium (2021); “O Mundo segue Indiferente a nós”, Maus Hábitos in Porto, Portugal (2021). Currently her work integrates the exhibition “Terra Abrecaminhos”, SESC Pompeia, São Paulo (2023). Queiroga was an artist in residence at ZSenne Art Lab, Brussels, Belgium, and TUP/ Maus Hábitos, Porto, Portugal, in 2021; at AiR 351, Portugal, in 2020 and 2018; at CAAA, Guimarães, Portugal, in 2015; IV Bienal del Fin del Mundo, Argentina, in 2014; Instituto Hilda Hilst, São Paulo, in 2013 and at Akademie der Bildenden der Künste Wien, Vienna, Austria, in 2012. Suzana Queiroga is AiR 351´s current local invited artist-in-residency.
Hostile and threatened landscapes are the sites for Jessica Segall´s work. While embedded in these sites, she plays with both the risk of engaging with the environment and the vulnerability of the environment itself, examining a queer ecology. Jessica is a 2023 Guggenheim Fellow and has previously received grants from The Pollock Krasner Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, among others. Her work is currently on view at Smack Mellon, Brooklyn, NY, The Fries Museum and was previously shown at The Coreana Museum of Art, The Havana Biennial, The Queens Museum of Art, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, among others.
